Sustainability and Ethics go hand in hand, and they’re both the new normal in the fashion industry. Environmental issues from the production of new textiles are been much discussed and this year, for the first time, the Fashion Pact was presented as a part of solution for Climate, Biodiversity and Oceans.
This Fashion Pact comes after many designers such as Eileen Fisher, Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood raised awareness for sustainability.
Accordingly to Euromonitor International, there’s an increase of consumer awareness of the impact of their ever-expanding fashion consumption, as competition shifts away from a focus on price.
As seen at the “Consumer Attitudes Towards Green Products 2019” graphic, 64% of Euromonitor International’s Lifestyle Survey 2019 agreed to the statement:
“I try to have a positive impact on the environment through my everyday actions”.
This translates into an opportunity to brands promote the origins, ethics and environmental impact of their activity. Moving away from outsourcing markets (such China and Bangladesh) and seeking closer to local markets brings the high-quality suppliers with transparent production processes to meet the growing demand.
Not only are brands, consumers and designers becoming aware of this theme, as well as textile companies.
What is Plain in Portugal doing to increase ethical businesses/fashion brands?
We search only the best factories, fabrics and garments to satisfy our costumer and their consumer. Our team analyse consumer and fashion trends to know what’s going on and help developing new and innovative alternatives to traditional fashion models.
Design for recycling is becoming the new normal and since we believe in closing the material loop in textile production, recycled garment and organic cotton, for example, are some of the materials we usually work with. All the fabric and garments used are tested in recognized laboratories such as INTERTEK and CITEVE. This help us to give only the best quality to our final costumer but to assure that we maintain our standards. However, it’s necessary to have the best factories, and by that we only work with certified by ISO and SEDEX.
However, ethic in textile industry is not only about the fabrics and the processes to produce new clothes. Is also about the well-being of the people that produces these garments. By a strict control by our team and the factories, all the workers are accompanied through the process.
